Bankruptcy: Friday Action

Update: Please check the main weblog regularly to keep up on new action items! Bookmark or subscribe to the rss feed.

House efforts will happen next week. I'll be working on this a bit over the weekend. If you have ideas for a good web tool that would help with this, let me know. Or if you have perl/php/mysql skills to donate.

For Friday - express your displeasure to the Senators who voted yes. Up to you as to how, but phone calls are better than email. No, this doesn't exactly make a difference in the vote, but it's Friday, and it's a good way to vent and reset for next week. Plus, it might do some good.

Here's the table of the Senators who voted yes, and their phone numbers. Note: you do not have an ethical obligation to limit yourself to your own party! Make the point this is a bipartisan issue to the public. If they live in your state, call them, even if they aren't of your party. (Use your judgment on calling an out of state Senator.)

Update: Politology had its first programming bug. ;-) There will be many, many more. My perl script (not me!) confused the phone numbers for Senators Nelson. Apologies, corrected, and thanks for letting me know.

I just got off the phone with Senator Reid's office. I asked why he voted for the bankruptcy bill. The woman who answered said that the senator has a statement that will be going up on his site. "Do you want me to read it to you?" I said that she should send the statement to Kos, so that everyone who is following this can read it. She didn't appear to know what Kos was. She got a little snippy when I referred to the statement as a press release (it was, after all prepared by his press release office....whatever), stating "I didn't say that ma'am". So, remember folks, it is a statement, not a press release. I will be checking the senator's site often today to see when it goes up and what it says.

I talked to his office too. The line that got me was "It's an improvement over current law. " Yeah? Prove that, Harry.

C'mon ... we all understand that Congress is nuttin' more than a STABLE of whores that work for their pimp, the credit card companies. Be they Dems or Republican'ts. Whores all.

I called, I faxed, I E-Mailed too. But, it's my guess that they (Congress) assumes the dust will settle and two years from now, no one will remember. And typically they have been right.

Are Bloggers gonna keep bringing this up? Doubtful. We bloggers will probably *MoveOn* (pun intended) too. Social Security or one of the many other attacks on the consumer is likely to be up next.

Don't get me wrong, I want THIS one to set the tone for a change in the status quo. I'll keep the "Wall-of-Shame" on my Blog (to remind myself, if no one else), I'll schedule a recurring alarm in my Palm to remind me to re-fax 'em all a reminder that *I* haven't forgotten how they betrayed us, etc, etc, etc. Hell, maybe I'll go across town and chamge my voter registration from Dem. to Independent (and then again, maybe not).

What else can we do? Where is "Dean" through all this?

It looks like Sarbanes D-MD announced he will retire at the end of his term ... the announcement comes one day after the bankruptcy debacle ... gotta wonder if it was a factor in his timing.

Nevada is 4th in the nation on the Household's per filing list.

The Bankruptcy bill was the easiest fight the Democrats could have.

Joe Lieberman and Chris Dodd voted NO.

By voting yes, Harry Reid, has enabled any Democrat who voted yes to say "I was just followin' orders from the boss."

Dick Durbin (minority whip) voted NO.

Grassroots from BOTH PARTIES hated this bill.

This bill disenfranchises those whom the Democrats BY DEFINITION should be defending, the poor and misfortunate.

By voting yes on this bill Harry Reid has slapped any and all pregressive democrats in the face.

However, look around the left side of the blogosphere... Silence. Crickets. Nothing from the so called crusaders for justice.

Ignoring this vote is toeing the line.

Shame on you all.

worse yet,

Republicans will say this was a bipartisan effort.

statement. I originally called this the senator's office to find out why he voted for the bankruptcy bill and was told that his press office had a statement and that the statement was not a press release, rather it would be posted on his site. I just called back and got the same staffer. I asked her when the statement would be posted. Long and short, she eventually checked with the press office and told me that the statement may go up later today or tomorrow or Monday. She also said that it might not go up at all. I told her that it would be more efficient for the senator to post the statement, rather than have folks keep calling to about this bill. She said, "well I guess people are going to have to continue calling." I think we need to have the phones ring off the hook at his office before we will see any statement. Please ask anyone you know who cares about this to call Senator Reid.

hmmm well there has been manufactured "consent" games, re-structuring people to like Harry, when there was early hesitation.
I prefer to wait and see what people do. Talk is cheap.

Harry always, thru the years iirc won by small margins, handfuls... in 98 500 votes. In '04 he sails in with 11%. where it came from how it ws delivered... the very year of the big Daschle take down. Maybe nothing...
I was not impressed with Harry and am not now. No big surprise. But lots of stories told about HR around the liberal blogospheria campfires to manufacture a liking for him....

Dems are no strangers to special interest pay backs, in fact they served up the Marlboro Man to trial lawyers in an extorsion scheme that resulted in the largest transfer of wealth in U.S. history..from the tobacco companys (read smokers) to private trial lawyers. A pay back that scored billions for lawyers and paved the way for onerous and predatory tobacco taxes. I have yet to see one gov. agency give away a single stick of Nicorette. I guess they felt our pain, but kept the money.

However, look around the left side of the blogosphere... Silence. Crickets. Nothing from the so called crusaders for justice.

I would take issue with that. The most highly trafficed blogs on the left AND right have come out against S.256. On the left, Kos has been blogging non-stop on this bill for the past week, as have LeftCoaster, Atrios, All Spin Zone among many others. On the right, InstaPundit, Free Republics, and others have come out against it.

I'm not sure what you're looking for...

There was considerable outcry against S.256 on the DNC blog the last two days. KOS has been relentless as well. Democracy for America yahoo groups have been screeching as well. Believe me, grassroots Democrats despise this bill.

Any Senator/House Rep that votes for this bill, be they Republican or Democrat, needs to get an earful from their constitutents. They don't get too worried until negative comments come in from their voting base.

How on earth is Washington getting away with this? I's a new blogger, and I don't have a handle on this TrackBack think. Here was my post today:
